छठ व्रती सुबह नदी या पवित्र जल से स्नान कर शुद्ध वस्त्र पहनते हैं। इस दिन सात्विक कद्दू (लौकी) की सब्जी, अरवा चावल (चना दाल के साथ) सेंधा नमक में मिट्टी के चूल्हे पर बनाकर प्रसाद रूप में ग्रहण किया जाता है। Devotees take a holy bath in rivers or clean water and wear fresh clothes. Pure vegetarian Kaddu-Bhat (bottle gourd with rice and split chickpeas cooked in rock salt) is consumed as consecrated food.
दिनभर निर्जला उपवास के बाद शाम को मिट्टी के चूल्हे पर आम की लकड़ी से गन्ने के शुद्ध गुड़ और नए चावल की खीर तथा घी चुपड़ी रोटी बनती है। छठी मइया को भोग लगाकर व्रती इसे खाते हैं, जिसके बाद 36 घंटे का अखंड निर्जला व्रत शुरू होता है। After fasting through the day, devotees prepare Jaggery Kheer (Rasiya) and ghee rotis on an earthen stove at sunset. Following prayer to Chhathi Maiya, this prasad is eaten, beginning the continuous 36-hour waterless fast.
बांस के सूप में ठेकुआ, नारियल, फल और प्रज्वलित दीपक सजाकर व्रती पूरे परिवार के साथ घाट पहुंचते हैं। शाम 05:28 PM पर कमर तक पवित्र जल में खड़े होकर अस्ताचलगामी (डूबते हुए) सूर्य देव को दूध व जल का पहला अर्घ्य समर्पित किया जाता है। Devotees carry decorated bamboo soops bearing thekua, fruits, and lit lamps to riverbanks. Standing waist-deep in water at sunset (05:28 PM), they offer the first sacred Arghya (milk & holy water) to the setting Sun God.
सूर्योदय से पूर्व तड़के घाट पर पहुंचकर जल में खड़े होकर उदीयमान सूर्य की प्रतीक्षा करते हैं। सुबह 06:44 AM पर उगते सूर्य को दूसरा अर्घ्य दिया जाता है। घाट पर छठी मइया की वंदना कर कच्चे दूध व अदरक के टुकड़े से 36 घंटे का महाव्रत खोला जाता है। Before dawn, devotees return to the river. At sunrise (06:44 AM), the final morning Arghya is presented to the rising Sun. Devotees break their 36-hour penance with ginger, raw milk, and prasad, completing the sacred Mahaparv.
